Uploading files.

Add PDF, Word, Markdown and text documents such as price lists, policies and guides, and what makes a good file.

Upload documents when the information visitors need is not on your website, or is easier to keep in a file: price lists, terms, policies, service guides, brochures.

Supported files

  • PDF (with real text, not a scanned image)
  • Word documents (.docx)
  • Markdown (.md) and plain text (.txt)

Up to 10 files at a time, 10 MB each. Each plan has a file allowance: 50 files on Starter, 300 on Growth and 1,500 on Scale. Uploaded files count towards the file allowance, not the website page allowance, whatever the source is called.

Upload a file

  1. Open Knowledge and choose Add source, then Files.
  2. Drag files in, or choose them.
  3. Choose Upload files. Askbridge reads the text straight away, and the files appear in the Uploaded files source.

Answers that use a file cite it by its title, so give files clear names, for example "Tenant fees 2026" rather than "doc_final_v3".

If you would rather turn a document into reviewed FAQs, use Import with AI on the FAQs page instead. See Writing FAQs.

Linking answers to your pages (Markdown)

A Markdown file can say which page of your website it describes, so answers that use it link to that page, and questions such as "What are your prices?" get a View pricing button. Add front matter at the top of the file:

---
title: Plans and prices
url: https://www.example.co.uk/pricing
---

The address must be on your own website: a site listed under Widget settings (allowed websites) or a website you added as a source. Otherwise the file is still added, without the link, and the upload says so. Website pages Askbridge reads from your site have their address already.

Replacing a file

Upload the new version with the same file name and it replaces the old one. If the content has not changed, Askbridge recognises it and does nothing. To read every file again, choose Refresh content on the source.

What makes a good file

  • Text, not pictures of text. Scanned PDFs cannot be read. Export from Word or your design tool instead.
  • Headings. Clear headings help Askbridge find the right passage.
  • Current information only. Remove old price lists; out-of-date files lead to out-of-date answers.
  • No personal data. Do not upload documents that contain customers' or staff members' personal details. Askbridge may quote any uploaded text to visitors.

What is kept

Askbridge does not keep the original file. It keeps the text it read, split into passages, in your workspace's database in the UK (London). Only your team can see it. When Askbridge answers a question, short extracts from the relevant passages are sent to the AI model to write the answer. See How answers work.

Source status

Each source shows Ready, Updating, Needs attention (with what went wrong and what to do) or Disabled. If a file could not be read, open the source to see which one and why.

Turning files off

The uploads source has a Used in answers switch. Turning it off stops answers using those files straight away; nothing is deleted, and turning it back on uses them again without re-reading. Removing the source deletes its files from your knowledge.
