Installing the widget.

Copy the install snippet, allow your website's address, paste it into your site (WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or Google Tag Manager) and check it is verified.

The widget is one line of code. It adds a small launcher button to your pages; the chat panel loads only when a visitor opens it, so your pages stay fast. Owners and admins can see the snippet and change the allowed websites.

Install the widget

  1. Open Widget in the menu, then the Installation tab.
  2. Under Install snippet, choose Copy snippet. It looks like <script src="…/widget/v1/askbridge.js" data-site="pk_…" async></script> with your own site key. Always copy it from your dashboard rather than from this page.
  3. Under Where the chat may load, add every website the chat will run on to Allowed websites with Add website, then choose Save changes. The chat does not load anywhere else (see the rules below).
  4. Paste the snippet into every page of your site, just before the closing </body> tag, or into your website builder's footer code. Steps for each platform are below and under Instructions for your platform on the Installation tab.
  5. Open your website in a private window and check the launcher appears in the corner you chose. Open it and ask a question.

The site key (pk_…) is public: it is part of the snippet and anyone can see it in your page's source. The dashboard hides it until you choose Show site key, only to keep it off your screen; copying copies the whole key either way. The same snippet, allowed websites and status are also in Settings, Domains and installation.

Allowed websites

  • Enter the website, not a page: https://www.example.co.uk/contact is saved as https://www.example.co.uk, and the page tells you what it kept.
  • Use https://. Plain http:// is accepted only for localhost and 127.0.0.1 while you develop.
  • www.example.co.uk and example.co.uk are different websites, and so is each subdomain such as shop.example.co.uk: add each one you use. Wildcards such as *.example.co.uk are not supported.
  • Add your staging site if you want to test there.

If the list is empty, the chat loads on no website, and the page warns you before you save. The list stops other websites from using your chat; Askbridge also applies its own rate limits and bot checks, so the list is one layer of protection rather than the only one.

When it shows as installed

The Status on the Installation tab says Installed once a visitor has chatted from one of your allowed websites. Until then it says Not verified yet. Opening the page yourself is not enough; ask a question in the chat on your site.

WordPress

  1. Install a header and footer plugin such as WPCode (or use your theme's custom code setting). With a child theme you can instead paste the snippet before </body> in footer.php; do not edit a parent theme directly, as updates remove the change.
  2. Paste the snippet into the footer section for the whole site.
  3. Save, then open your site in a private window to check the launcher appears.

Wix

  1. Go to Settings, then Custom code (needs a premium plan with a connected domain).
  2. Choose Add custom code, paste the snippet, apply it to All pages and place it in Body - end.
  3. Publish the site.

Squarespace

  1. Open Settings, then Advanced, then Code injection (Business plan or above).
  2. Paste the snippet into the Footer box and save.

Shopify

  1. In Online Store, open Themes, then Edit code on your live theme.
  2. Open layout/theme.liquid and paste the snippet just before </body>.
  3. Save, then check your storefront. If you change theme later, add the snippet to the new theme too.

Google Tag Manager

  1. Create a new tag of type Custom HTML and paste the snippet.
  2. Set the trigger to All Pages (or Initialization - All Pages).
  3. Submit and publish the container.

The widget sets no advertising or analytics cookies. After a visitor sends their first message, it stores a conversation reference in their browser so the conversation continues if they change page. This is needed for the service the visitor asked for. Check how your own consent tool is set up, and mention Askbridge in your privacy notice: see Privacy and your visitors' data.

Content Security Policy

If your site uses a Content Security Policy, allow the script address in your snippet and the Askbridge address it connects to.

If it does not appear

See Troubleshooting. The usual causes are a missing or unsaved snippet, a cached page, or an address that is not in your allowed websites (with or without www.).

Changing the site key

Rotate site key on the Installation tab replaces the key at once. The old snippet stops working, so the chat disappears from every website using it until you paste the new snippet. Only do this if you want existing copies of the snippet to stop working, for example if someone copied it onto another site. Saving or cancelling other settings never changes the key.
